Comments from the Beginning Principals Workshop:
“Highly recommend this workshop for new principals as they set the tone for the year”.
K. Dombrowski, Principal, Stanly County Schools, NC
“DJ is a wealth of knowledge regarding principal leadership. I have a plan going into the first 90 days of this school year, as well as a framework for revisiting my school’s mission, vision, and beliefs!”
L. McGuire, Principal, Gaston County Schools, NC
“This workshop couldn’t have come at a better time. The information shared was relevant, timely, and on-point. I feel better prepared to take this next step.”
L. Kinard, Principal, Thomasville City Schools, NC
“Practical ideas to implement right away. I will use the information learned today to outline my 90-day plan for my new school. Dr. Jones helped me to organize a 90-day plan as a new principal. I left feeling more at ease and prepared to meet the needs of my school”.
J. Spivey, Harnett County Schools, NC
“DJ has provided staff development to select assistant principals for the last several years as part of a year long program called Aspiring Principals. The program is designed to prepare those assistant principals in our district who are seen as principal ready to take the next step in their careers. She provided three two-hour sessions over three different dates, one at the beginning of the school year in September, one in January, and the final one in April at the end of the class. I personally always benefit from listening to DJ, even if it is only a reminder of the priorities we must have when leading schools. I know the class participants gained a great deal in knowledge and common sense advice on navigating the principalship.
In the past year Cumberland County has appointed more than ten principals to positions who came through the Aspiring Principals' program. I believe all of them are better leaders as a result of the tremendous professional development and resources DJ provided.”
Mark Culbreth, Director of School Support, Cumberland County, NC
“During a summative conference, I asked a teacher the following question "What did she attribute to the dramatic improvement in her classroom management from the previous year?" She shared that she used the Time to Teach skills she was taught by Dr. Jones. She and her students modeled procedures and what acceptable classroom behavior should look like. She also added with a smile that the students became managers of their teams and held everyone accountable. The classroom management improvement led to great teacher confidence and thus improved student achievement. Great success story!”
Shelia Gilliard, Principal, Southern Middle School, Moore County Schools
“DJ has done several sessions on instructional leadership for the Principal Fellows and had outstanding evaluations from the participants. She also facilitated the interview process for candidates for our program at one of our sites. Our Principal Fellows gained knowledge and strategies to help them perform their role as instructional leaders. DJ shared a wealth of information with them and also provided quality resources they can use in their work in schools. DJ is very knowledgeable and connects with her audience. She has a wealth of experience in a variety of leadership roles and is able to share her insights and suggestions to help participants learn. She includes numerous opportunities for participants to be actively involved in her sessions. The Principal Fellows love her! I highly recommend Dr. Jones. She is someone you can depend on to provide quality service.”
Catherine Payne, Director, North Carolina Principal Fellows Program
"Dr. Jones has been the presenter for our first year teachers. She provides a full day training for the teachers and it has been highly rated by the teachers. She provides real-life experiences and information that teachers find helpful and very supporting during their first year. [As a result of the leadership sessions] I was able to see an increase in the performance of the beginning teachers in the district. I have also noted a decrease in the number of being teachers who are completely leaving the profession during their first years of teaching. As a district, we have seen some of our schools build more stability among staff and increase student and school performance. Dr. Jones is an excellent presenter. I highly recommend her sessions."
Antonia Beatty, Director of Human Resources and Federal Programs, Bladen County Schools
“Dr. DJ provided support for me during my early days as a school leader, especially in the area of professional development and instructional support. Dr. DJ helped me to identify and assess the strengths and weaknesses of my teachers and then develop activities and learning opportunities to build on their strengths. These activities allowed me to support my teachers in focusing on and increasing student learning through more effective collaboration and focused intervention. Her work with teachers on classroom management is incredibly effective and helps teachers to understand their hidden assumptions and bias about student behavior. This leads to an understanding of what motivates students in the classroom and how teachers can harness that motivation to create an environment that is conducive to achievement.”
Tracy Metcalf, Principal, New Century Middle School , Moore County Schools
"Very motivating. She understood our population and how hard we focus everyday to ensure our students' academic success."
"Enjoyed positive attitude and validation towards what we do."
"I loved Dr. Jones. We should take some things she said to make changes to our school." (Example: "What is best for our students.")
"It was amazing and super helpful!!!"
"She was inspiring and spoke alot of truths. Dr. Jones said, 'A successful school is built on good relationships between the staff and adminstration.'"
